STEP THREE

Handling Parachutes

Parachute play is a great way to get everyone to play together. Parachutes intrigue even the most reluctant of children, encouraging them to participate.

To begin, arrange the students in a circle around the perimeter of the parachute. If the parachute has handles, students can hold onto them. If the parachute does not have handles, students can simply roll up the edge of the parachute in order to hold it in their hands.

Then, try the following variety of activities

Circles

* Student’s simply walk in a circle (holding the parachute), first clockwise, then counterclockwise. Each student can use both hands at hold and then just the right hand.

Have the students walking, running, skipping, or hopping in a Circle.

Have them practice counting by I’s, 2’s, 5’s, or 10’s while walking in the circle. In addition, students can recite rhymes or the alphabet.

Waves

Have each student shake the parachute in order to make waves.

Describe the kind of waves you want him or her to make. For example, each student can make gentle waves or rough waves. Begin by having the student use both hands to make the waves. Then, have him or her use only the right hand. Then, have the student use only the left hand.

Circle Activities

Have each student walk in a circle while holding the parachute with one hand. Provide another activity for the student to do with the other hand, such as lifting the hand over head or throwing and catching a scarf. Be sure to alternate the direction in which the student walks, thus altering the hand that each student must use to juggle the scarf.
