Insightful Moments from the Delhi Conference on Sports & PE organised by Central Board of Secondary Education & Sports, Sector Skill Council of India.
Former Lt. Governor Dr. Kiran Bedi passionately advocated for a vibrant play culture to engage more children in sports, highlighting its transformative impact on character and teamwork. Dr. Biswajit Saha, Director CBSE emphasised that PE periods are to focus on fitness first. As announced in the 2018 circular every class must have one Physical activity period every day. Mr. Tahsin Zahid, CEO of the Sports Sector Skill Council of India, echoed the pressing need for a paradigm shift towards a Physical Literacy informed approach in Physical Education. Champion boxer Mr. Gaurav Bidhuri highlighted a key oversight: the lack of a curriculum focused on understanding our bodies’ needs! Mr. Bidhuri emphasized that only athletes truly grasp their body’s performance.
Gita Krishna Raj, CEO, Maverick & National Head of the Physical Education Program for Schools from the Sports sector skill council, highlighted the tripartite relationship in education: student, teacher, and content. She elaborated:
Students need to understand the “why” of movement – is that an intellectual question or an emotional one?
Teachers focus on the “how” of teaching – is there a difference between obedience and self-discipline?
Content needs to expand the bandwidth of “what” is being taught – can we integrate arts and sports for a holistic approach in our curriculum?
The conference empowered schools to support teachers and enhance their PE curriculum to promote holistic development!
